Any equipment used within a firm must necessarily have its Use and maintenance manual , where users may find the information for the correct and safe use and effective maintenance of the equipment (legislative decree no. 81/2008 Art. 71, par. 4 letter a.)
The use and maintenance manual is therefore required for industrial racks too, as they are considered working equipment.
In case of missing documents, VEGA may supply specific use and maintenance manuals for the following systems:
- pallet racks
- cantilever racks
- racks with gangways
- mezzanines
- drive-in racks

In 2004 the magazine “Il Giornale della Logistica”, one of the sector’s main publications, interviewed us and published the following article.

Businesses generally attach great importance to the setting up of storerooms: the choice of shelving solutions and the plant layout are the result of a careful evaluation of specific needs and safety provisions.
But then?
Like all other working equipment, racks require regular checks and maintenance works, as established by law and common sense.

Despite the existing workplace safety legislation, more or less serious accidents continue to occur and often involve racks and shelves used to store materials, which are installed and loaded and then… forgotten!
When choosing this equipment, attention is generally paid to the characteristics affecting solidity, resistance, functionality and safety: any storeroom would be negatively affected if those characteristics were not up to standards.
Solidity and resistance are the key elements considered during the purchasing process, and comparisons are made between different solutions available on the market, while taking into account the business specific loading needs.

Since 1955, law provisions establish the obligation of periodical checks and maintenance of working equipment. Until recently, though, there were no specific provisions concerning industrial racks.
At present, the main reference framework is legislative decree no. 81/2008; the recent UNI EN 15635/2009 standard (“Steel static storage systems – Application and maintenance of storage equipment”), however, sets forth specific conditions to regulate the effective use of racks.
The standard is addressed to the firms having storerooms (including chemical companies, businesses operating in the food sector, from manufacturers to distributors, as well as providers of logistical services) that wish to guarantee the optimal management of storerooms, also in terms of safety for the personnel, the environment and the goods.

In 1998, the Technical Service branch was set up dealing with safety aspects in storerooms served by industrial shelving solutions.
New specific services are now offered, such as:
- periodical scheduled inspections
- maintenance
- certification for racking systems with no mandatory load capacity labels
- training courses for persons in charge with storage systems
